Americano d'origine ( è nato a Leominster, Massachusetts, nel 1958), Paul David Redfern risiede e lavora da tempo in Italia (a Gorizia), dove nel 2014 è stato insignito del titolo di Cavaliere della Repubblica per meriti artistici. La sua passione per le auto classiche - è felice possessore di due Fiat 500 storiche - lo ha portato, nel 1994, a elaborare un suggestivo progetto artistico denominato "Photomorfosi". Di che cosa si tratta ce lo spiega lui stesso: "Sono fotomanipolazioni digitali. In estrema sintesi, realizzo le mie opere con tre soli strumenti: un iMac, una fotocamera digitale e Photoshop." Ciò che rende in realtà le sue creazioni particolarmente suggestive è l'uso massiccio delle cosiddette texture grafiche, che suggeriscono l'illusione che il soggetto sia dipinto su una superficie reale, come ad esempio il legno, la latta o la pietra, anziché al computer. "L'osservatore" ci spiega, "può facilmente immaginare che ciò che vede sia un oggetto reale, piuttosto che un'immagine digitale rappresentata da una sequenza di bit". A caratterizzare ulteriormente i suoi "quadri", sempre in colori plumbei e con ampio utilizzo dell'effetto ruggine, ci sono figure nascoste nella composizione che richiedono, per essere individuate, un'osservazione attenta e prolungata tra giochi di sovrapposizioni e trasparenze. Provate a trovarle! Un modo per invitare lo spettatore a entrare nel mondo dell'artista. Ma soprattutto una forma originale d'intendere l'elaborazione digitale, che di norma gioca tutto sull'immediatezza e impatto. I suoi soggetti sono icone dagli anni Trenta in avanti, sportive ma anche note utilitarie, contestualizzate con elementi grafici e pubblicitari contemporanei al soggetto.

"My art drowned in a texture"

To further characterize his "paintings", always in lead colors and with a wide use of the rust effect, there are hidden figures in the composition that require careful and prolonged observation between games of overlapping and transparencies to be identified. But above all an original form of understanding digital processing, which normally plays everything on immediacy and impact. His subjects are icons from the thirties onwards, sporty but also utilitarian notes, contextualized with contemporary graphic and advertising elements to the subject
